Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about artificial eyes, ocular prosthetics and our clinic.

General

An artificial eye is a custom-made medical device that replaces the appearance of a missing or disfigured eye. Crafted from medical-grade acrylic, it is hand-painted to match your natural eye's colour, iris pattern and size — sitting comfortably in the socket and moving naturally with your eye muscles.

A full prosthesis replaces a surgically removed eye. A scleral shell is an ultra-thin device worn over an existing blind, shrunken or disfigured eye that is still present in the socket — no surgery required.

No. An ocular prosthesis is purely cosmetic — it replicates the eye's appearance and maintains socket health. Visual restoration requires an entirely different medical intervention.

Common reasons include eye removal due to cancer (retinoblastoma, melanoma), severe trauma, painful blind eye, congenital absence of the eye (anophthalmia), phthisis bulbi, and severe eye disfigurement.

Fitting Process

Typically 2–5 working days from initial consultation to final fitting, requiring 2–3 visits for impressions, colour-matching, hand-painting the iris, and final adjustment.

No — completely non-invasive and pain-free. Initial awareness while adapting is normal. Persistent discomfort means an adjustment is needed, which we address immediately.

A conformer is fitted immediately post-surgery. A permanent prosthesis is made once the socket heals — typically 6–8 weeks after surgery.

Yes. Paediatric prostheses should be fitted as early as possible. Children's prostheses need replacement every 6–12 months as the socket grows with the child.

Care & Maintenance

Remove at bedtime, clean gently with mild soap and warm water, rinse well, and store in a container with cooled boiled water or saline. Irrigate the socket gently as needed.

Every 6–12 months for professional polishing and check-up. Over time the surface develops micro-scratches that cause irritation — polishing restores comfort.

A well-maintained acrylic prosthesis lasts 5–7 years. Children's prostheses need replacement more frequently. 3D prostheses can be reproduced identically when a replacement is needed.
